VWAP explained: VWAP bands, anchored VWAP and intraday use on NIFTY
What is VWAP?
VWAP (volume weighted average price) is the average price of the session, weighted by how much traded at each price. Prices where more contracts changed hands count more. It starts fresh at 9:15 IST every day and builds through to 15:30.
Think of VWAP as the day's fair price: the average entry of everyone who traded today. Large participants often judge their execution against VWAP, which is one reason price tends to react around it.
VWAP is the most used intraday reference line in futures and stocks, and the base of many a VWAP strategy for intraday trading.
VWAP = Σ (typical price × volume) / Σ volume, from the session open
band = VWAP ± k × volume-weighted standard deviation
How VWAP is calculated
- For each candle, find the typical price: (high + low + close) / 3.
- Multiply it by the candle's volume.
- Add up these products from the session open.
- Divide by the total volume from the session open.
Some platforms use the close instead of the typical price, or use tick-level prices. The results are very close. Because VWAP is cumulative, every new candle has less influence as the day goes on: early VWAP moves a lot, and afternoon VWAP barely moves.
How to read VWAP
Above or below
Price holding above VWAP means today's buyers on average are in profit and buyers have been willing to pay up. Below VWAP, sellers are in control and today's buyers are underwater.
Slope
A VWAP that slopes steadily is a trend day. A flat VWAP with price crossing it repeatedly is a balance or range day.
Reaction at VWAP
On trend days, the first pullbacks to VWAP often hold. On range days, price swings to both sides and keeps returning to VWAP like a magnet. A strong close through VWAP that then holds on a retest often shows a change of control.
VWAP vs moving average
| VWAP | Moving average | |
|---|---|---|
| Weighting | Volume | Time (equal or exponential) |
| Reset | Every session | Never; rolls over |
| After a gap | Starts at today's prices | Still includes yesterday |
| Meaning | Average entry price today | Recent price trend |
The reset is the key advantage for intraday work: VWAP is not polluted by the overnight gap. Moving averages are still useful for multi-day trend; see moving averages.
VWAP bands (standard deviation bands)
VWAP bands are drawn at 1, 2 and sometimes 3 volume-weighted standard deviations above and below VWAP. They show how stretched price is from the day's fair value.
- Inside ±1σ: normal rotation around value.
- At ±2σ: extended. On range days, moves to the 2σ band often stall; on trend days, price can walk along the 1σ or 2σ band.
- At ±3σ: rare, usually news or a strong one-way day.
Like Bollinger Bands, VWAP bands describe volatility, not direction. Decide the day type first, then read the bands.
Anchored VWAP
An anchored VWAP starts from a moment you choose instead of the session open. It shows the average price paid by everyone since that event.
Common anchors
- A major swing high or low.
- A gap day or a big news candle (RBI policy, budget, results).
- The start of the week, month or expiry series.
- A break of structure candle.
When price returns to an anchored VWAP from a big low, it is returning to the average entry of the buyers who stepped in at that low. Whether that line holds tells you if those buyers still defend their position.
A VWAP strategy for NIFTY: framework
A typical VWAP strategy for NIFTY futures is a framework rather than a rule:
- First 15 to 30 minutes: let VWAP settle. Note the opening range and whether price is building above or below VWAP.
- Classify the day: steady slope and price on one side suggests trend; flat VWAP and crossings suggests range.
- Trend day: study pullbacks to VWAP or the 1σ band in the trend direction, with order flow showing the pullback being absorbed.
- Range day: study the 2σ bands and key levels for rejection back toward VWAP.
- Change of control: a strong close through VWAP plus a held retest.
- Combine with intraday key levels, CPR and the footprint.
Trading F&O carries a high risk of loss; VWAP organises information but does not remove risk.
Worked example: BANKNIFTY VWAP retest (illustration)
This is an illustration with plausible numbers.
BANKNIFTY futures open at 51,820, dip to 51,700 and recover. By 10:15 IST, VWAP is at 51,790 and price is at 51,960, with VWAP sloping up. At 11:05, price pulls back to 51,800, ten points above VWAP. The footprint at the low shows sellers hitting bids without moving price lower, and a buying imbalance appears on the next candle.
A trader studying this reads it as a trend-day pullback being defended. If price instead closed below 51,770 and held below VWAP, the trend-day reading would be wrong and the day might be turning to balance.
Common VWAP mistakes
- Using VWAP on the spot index, which has no volume.
- Trusting VWAP in the first few minutes, when it is still moving fast.
- Treating every VWAP touch as support on a range day.
- Fading price at 2σ on a strong trend day.
- Forgetting that VWAP is a zone; a few points through it is not a "break".
VWAP and day types
Most of the value of VWAP comes from recognising what kind of day it is. A few common day types on NIFTY and BANKNIFTY futures:
Trend day
Price opens, builds on one side of VWAP and stays there. VWAP slopes steadily. Pullbacks rarely reach VWAP after the first hour; the 1σ band often acts as the line instead. Fading such a day at the 2σ band tends to be painful.
Balance or range day
VWAP is flat. Price swings to both sides, often reaching the 1σ or 2σ band and returning. The previous day's value area and point of control often hold the range. See volume profile.
Reversal day
Price trends one way in the morning, then crosses VWAP with conviction and holds on the other side. These often start with a sweep of an obvious high or low.
Gap days
After a large gap, VWAP starts at the new prices. Whether price holds above or below VWAP in the first 30 minutes says a lot about whether the gap is being accepted or rejected.
Expiry days
On weekly expiry, price can pin around a heavy strike late in the session, and VWAP often flattens as the day becomes rotational. See max pain.
Reading VWAP with order flow
The footprint shows what happens at the VWAP touch. Selling that hits bids without pushing price lower suggests absorption and a defended VWAP. Aggressive selling with stacked imbalances below VWAP suggests control is changing. The cumulative delta line adds a session-long view of who has been more aggressive.
Seeing it on the TradingMarble chart
The TradingMarble chart plots session VWAP on NIFTY and BANKNIFTY futures and F&O stocks, together with the footprint, volume profile and key levels. You can watch how buyers and sellers behave each time price returns to VWAP. The full toolset is listed on the features page.
VWAP checklist
- Is VWAP sloping (trend) or flat (range)?
- Which side of VWAP is price spending time on?
- How far is price in standard deviations?
- Is there an anchored VWAP from a key event nearby?
- What does order flow show at the VWAP touch?
Read with the day type in mind, VWAP is the clearest single line for intraday context. Pair it with the volume profile to see where value sits.
Frequently asked questions
What is VWAP in trading?
VWAP, volume weighted average price, is the average price of the session weighted by traded volume. It resets at the session open (9:15 IST in India). Price above VWAP means today's average buyer is in profit; below it, sellers are in control. It is widely used as an intraday fair-value line.
How do you use VWAP for intraday trading?
Traders first decide whether the day is trending or ranging. On trend days, pullbacks to VWAP or its 1σ band are studied for continuation; on range days, the outer bands and key levels are watched for rejection back to VWAP. A strong close through VWAP that holds a retest can show a change of control.
Can VWAP be used on NIFTY spot?
No. The NIFTY 50 index has no traded volume, so a true VWAP cannot be computed on spot. Traders use NIFTY futures, which have real volume, and apply the reading to spot or options. The same applies to BANKNIFTY.
What are VWAP bands?
VWAP bands are lines drawn at multiples of the volume-weighted standard deviation above and below VWAP, usually 1σ, 2σ and 3σ. They show how far price has stretched from the day's average. They describe volatility, not direction, so the day type decides how to read them.
What is anchored VWAP?
Anchored VWAP is a VWAP calculated from a chosen starting point, such as a major swing low, a gap day or a news candle, instead of the session open. It shows the average entry of everyone who traded since that event, and traders watch how price reacts when it returns to that line.
Is VWAP better than a moving average?
For intraday work, VWAP has two advantages: it is weighted by volume and it resets every day, so it is not distorted by overnight gaps. Moving averages are better for multi-day trends. Many traders use both: VWAP for today, moving averages for the bigger picture.
